Samsung Epic updating to Froyo, when?

After consideration, I decided to get Sprint's Samsung Epic on February 6, 2011. It runs Android OS 2.1 (eclair) and is due for an update to 2.2 (froyo.) With 2.3 (gingerbread,) 2.4 (gingerbread 2,) and 3.0 (honeycomb) in the cross-hairs, I have to SMDH on this one. Although I am satisfied with the superior hardware on the Epic, I do feel like public relations with Sprint and Samsung are harming the phone's reputation.

Let's look at the timeline...
June 29, 2010- Samsung confirms all Galaxy S to get 2.2
December 4, 2010- Sprint releases froyo, not
December 29, 2010- Another delay
February 16, 2011- Rumor of Froyo's release

Now, why is this such a big deal? I found a video of the AT&T's version of the Galaxy S phone, Captivate, comparing 2.1 and a leaked 2.2. Things to note include option to enable hotspot, disable network data, segregation of display and sound options, sensor aiding, advanced application management, flash 10.1, gmail changes, various performance changes. Well, those don't really catch my attention. What I'm looking at is benchmarks. Here is a benchmark comparison of stock 2.1 vs a leaked 2.2 with a lagfix. It shows over a 100% improvement.

The novelty of the phone prevents me from venturing into the rooting world. Even though I do have experience with my previous phone, the HTC Hero, I'll be patient. Therefore, we'll see if froyo gets released or not in the "future."

2/22/11 Is it finally over? I installed it, and it works. However there are issues with media and the camera.
