Episode: UIG ft. Jonathan Buckley of Ping Identity

I attended the 3/22/2011 CCSF's Undergraduate Investment group meeting featuring guest speaker Johnathan Buckley, Midmarket Vice President of Ping Identity. He spent a great deal talking about his experiences prior to Ping Industry, transitioning from an economic generalist to marketing. Buckley expressed multiple models of success that left an impression on me. I won't spend time elaborating on the models in detail. However, this is the impression I got from my perspective. Here are some of brief impressions of the models he mentioned:
  • In management, know the right people to fill the niches when needed.
  • Learn the science of the business world, before exploring the art.
  • Conveying a skill is the first step, then build a reputation.
  • Empathizing with the consumer is key to trend prediction.

He also enlightened us on Ping Identity's business. Ping Industry's SSO (Single Sign ON) service is based on securing the client in a cloud integrated network. Nothing too complicated on the outside, however his representation is understated based on my research. He promoted a Facebook page called Marketing Blunder of The Week. I glanced at most of the posts and found them to exploit the humor when marketing is misinterpreted. It's something to pass the time with and has consistent content.

I was able to steal five minutes of Buckley's time. I found out aside from keyboard input, they have developed their software to work with biometrics. This company has a lot of partnerships, so information like this definitely grants an edge in the industry. I asked Buckley his thoughts on the AT&T and T-Mobile merger because he had experience in the telecom industry and a background in economics. When I asked him for his prediction, he replied that "it would be a disservice to AT&T customers if they didn't go through with the merger." He thought of consolidation, scrutiny from DOJ And FTC, and price wars to be non-influential.
